School Internet connection excites Mwanza communities

Communities in Senior Chief Nthache in Mwanza District have commended government for constructing an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory at Thawale Community Day Secondary School (CDSS).

Senior Chief Nthache said this on Sunday when Minister of Information and Digitisation Moses Kunkuyu launched the Connect a School Project in the area.

The chief said the initiative will not only benefit students but also community members who will access Internet for businesses transactions.

“Communities will no longer travel to Mwanza Boma to access Internet services because they will access it for free at the CDSS,” said Nthache.

On his part, Kunkuyu said it was government’s wish to construct about 5 000 ICT laboratories in the country and connect them to Internet.

He also said government will furnish the facilities with equipment such as computers and printers.

“In the first phase, 75 ICT laboratories will be constructed in the target secondary schools within 90 days until the rest are all reached with the intervention,” said Kunkuyu.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) board director Alekeni Menyani, whose institution is facilitating the project, said Macra is committed to expanding Internet connectivity in rural areas.

“We used to concentrate in urban areas only but now we are living in the digital world, therefore, all areas, regardless of location, have to be connected to the Internet,” he said.

Thawale CDSS head teacher Robert Maoza said the project was a big milestone for the school because it will be a platform for learners to access important information.
