Dyeratu said the project seeks to promote a culture of saving among Social Cash Transfer Programme beneficiaries to enable them become economically independent after graduating from the programme.

“No money is too little to save. Therefore, we encourage you to start saving money to embark on a journey to economic independence,” he said.

Dyeratu said the Social Protection for Gender Empowerment and Resilience project seeks to enhance resilience and livelihoods among women and girls from vulnerable households.

He said they trained 33 community-based trainers to help in implementing the project.

Dyeratu said they mobilised 109 savings and loans groups against their target of 163.

“The groups will be taken through a series of trainings such as savings and loans group methodology, financial literacy and business management,” he said.

Neno district social welfare officer Amos Chandilanga said the programme is designed to provide targeted support that not only enhances people’s economic status but also strengthens their resilience to shocks and disasters.

One of the beneficiaries, Malinga Phiri, said she joined a savings and loans group to save money for rainy days.

The European Union and the Government of Ireland in partnership with Unicef are funding the project in the district.
