Increasing road accidents in Mzuzu and Karonga have forced the Malawi Police Service and National Road Safety Council to jointly conduct a road users’ sensitisation campaign.

National officer in charge for community policing, Senior Deputy Commissioner Masauko Medi, unveiled the campaign on Wednesday when the two entities interacted with taxi drivers, bicycle operators and other road users in Mzuzu.

The campaign in Karonga and Mzuzu is being carried out under the theme Doing Business with a Road Safety Responsibility.

“A number of people, who could have contributed to the development of the country, are being lost. He said those who get injured also do not participate fully in development.

“These accidents are also affecting the economy of the country. A lot of money is spent on buying medicine and treating people,” said Medi.

He noted that most accidents were due to negligence, reckless driving and fatigue.
