President Lazarus Chakwera left for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday where he was expected to hold bilateral talks with that country’s President-elect Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo on the sidelines of his inauguration today.

Chakwera left the country through Chileka International Airport in Blantyre and was seen off by the country’s Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima, ministers, government officials, traditional leaders and Tonse Alliance members.

Speaking on his departure, the President described the trip as essential in enhancing peace and regional security matters that affect Malawi Defence Force troops currently deployed in peace-keeping activities in Eastern DRC.

“Issues of peace and security are extremely important for our regional integration. The invitation that Tshisekedi gave me is something that I need to sacrifice for the sake of peace and security in our region; hence this journey,” he said.

The President will return tomorrow via the same airport.
