Queens co-coach impressed with progress of preparations
Malawi Queens’ co-coach Mary Waya says she is impressed with the progress of the team’s preparations ahead of the Quad Series scheduled for next month in Nottingham, United Kingdom.
With two weeks before the tournament, the Queens’ legend believes the players are doing well in improving their fitness levels, technical skills and endurance.

During the four-day Quad Series, the Queens, ranked seveth in the world, will compete against hosts and fourth-ranked England’s Vitality Roses and fellow African giants South Africa’s Spar Proteas, who are ranked fifth, and sixth-ranked Uganda’s She Cranes.
“We have been concentrating much on polishing our attacking, defending and shooting, and we are satisfied with how the girls are responding. We are really impressed,” she said.
“They are agile and have upped their game in terms of endurance, which was one of our major weaknesses. They are giving their all as they are able to play for an hour without getting tired. If we maintain this lane in the next two weeks, we should expect good results at the tournament.”
Waya said they started camping with two players less due to centre Takondwa Lwazi-Chiwaya and shooter Nancy Mwaulambo’s illness. But the duo has since joined camp.
The camping follows the Queens’ participation in the Africa Netball Championship in Namibia where they stuttered to a fourth place finish for the first time following a loss to 13th-ranked Zimbabwe in third-placed match.
The Queens also went to South Africa where they lost all their three Test Series to the hosts by at least 30-basket margins.
A few days ago, Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) challenged the Queens to win the Quad Series since they have ample time for preparations.
NAM general secretary Yamikani Kauma told The Nation that the team’s rebuilding process should not be an excuse for dismal performance on the international stage.
