Raiply Volleyball tourney starts today

The K5 million Raiply National Volleyball Championship starts today at Katoto Sports Complex in Mzuzu and will end on Sunday.

Top 10 men’s and women’s teams will participate in the tournament.

Speaking in an interview, Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM) general secretary Jairosi Nkhoma said the tournament will also be used as a platform to select teams for Zone VI Club Championship in December this year.

“We don’t take the support we get from Raiply for granted. My appeal to teams is that they should take the tournament very seriously as it will be used to select best teams for Zone-VI Club Championship the country will host in December this year,” he said.

The champions in women’s and men’s sections  will get K700 000 each.

The runners-up will receive K300 000 each while third-placed teams will get K200 000 each.

There will also be consolation prizes for all participating teams and individual prizes.

Moyale Barracks are men’s defending champions while Eagles are women’s defending champions.

Meanwhile, Moyale head coach Hoha Phiri said he is confident of retaining the title.

“We are prepared for the tournament as our focus remains that we should retain the title,” he said.

The host, Northern Region, will be represented by four teams in each category while the other regions have three teams in each.

In the men’s category, the Northern Region will have Moyale Barracks, Moyale Troopers, Eagles Claws and Chibavi Smashers while Moyale Queens, Katoto Queens, Eagles Claws Women and Raficki High School compete in the women’s category.

The Central Region will be represented by Kamuzu Barracks, Lilongwe Spikers and Eagles in the men’s category while in the women’s category it will have Kamuzu Barracks Ladies, Eagles Ladies and Snippers Ladies.

The South has Thunders, Cobbe Artillery and Poly Troopers in men’s category while Gemz, Blazers and Chanco in the women category.

Raiply raised the sponsorship from K4.5 million to K5 million.
