Speaking during the distribution of items at Chankhanga in the district on Monday, Red Cross head of disaster management Patrick Phiri said the survivors have been struggling.

He said: “Therefore, we mobilised aid to lessen the people’s suffering.

“We are not here to please anyone but to give some relief to the survivors who are going through tough moments. I urge each one of you to use the aid for the intended purpose. Whatever is given out should be used for the best interest of the family.”

On his part, Kasungu District Council chief planning officer George Mtengowadula commended Red Cross for the assistance.

He said: “Almost 70 percent of affected families are now relieved that they have received something.

“We will engage our implementing partners for help to ensure that affected families have been supported in one way or the other.”

A beneficiary Chifundo Chalema said life has been tough since the disaster occurred last year.

With K304 million financial support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, Malawi Red Cross Society is supporting people affected by Cyclone Chido in Phalombe, Blantyre, Zomba and Kasungu districts.

The country experienced Cyclone Chido in December 2024.
