Persons with disabilities, youths get elections boost

Women’s Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec) and Oxfam in Malawi have engaged persons with disabilities and male youths aspiring to contest in the September 16 General Election.

Speaking during a training in Mponela in Dowa District  yesterday, National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust executive director Grey Kalindakafe commended the two organisations for the training, which sought to equip participants with knowledge on issue-based campaign.

“Such initiatives are crucial in promoting inclusive and issue-based politics and ensuring that young and marginalised people are well-prepared for leadership roles,” he said.

On his part, Thyolo Central legislator Ben Phiri (Democratic Progressive Party) urged aspirants to first understand the political landscape.

He also cautioned them against treating politics as a business venture because such a mindset fuels corruption and bad governance.

Said Phiri: “You cannot start a race that you do not understand. You need to be prepared and have a vision. Malawi needs leaders who want to transform the nation for the betterment of everyone.

“As aspirants, you need to understand that this is not a money-making venture because that compromises development and public service.”

Salima Central West parliamentary aspirant Shaffie Mussah (UTM Party), said the training came at the right time when he needed inspiration.

Machinga’s Mikoko Constituency parliamentary aspirant Alexander Shoti (Malawi Congress Party), said the training will be valuable in both the primaries and the general election.

The initiative is funded by  the European Union.
