Red Cross gives money to rainstorm survivors

Malawi Red Cross Society has disbursed money ranging from K26 000 to K65 000 to people affected by rainstorms in Traditional Authority (T/A) Jalasiin Mangochi District.

In an interview on Tuesday, Malawi Red Cross Society spokesperson Felix Washon said they opted for cash based on their assessment on the ground.

“We want the beneficiaries to buy construction materials to rebuild their houses destroyed during the storm,” he said.

Washon said the affected people received the amounts depending on the extent of damage to their houses.

Mangochi district relief and rehabilitation officer Francis Kadzokoya commended Malawi Red Cross Society for responding to their request to help the affected households.

He asked other humanitarian organisations and companies to collaborate with Mangochi District Council to ensure the affected people get relevant relief items.

A beneficiary, Osman Sikweya, from Nkuti Village, thanked Malawi Red Cross Society for the donation.

However, he expressed concern that the money was not enough to rebuild his house.

Said Sikweya: “I have received K38 000, which is not enough to buy 34 iron sheets for my house.

“I, therefore, urge other well-wishers to help us recover from the loss.”

Malawi Red Cross Society is also supporting other communities affected by rainstorms in T/As Nankumba, Bwananyambi, Chilipa, Namabvi and Chiunda with financial support from the European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection.

Rainstorms and floods have also affected Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje, Mchinji and Lilongwe districts.

According to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, the country is expected to receive normal to above normal rainfall in the 2021/22 season.
