Red Cross pumps K41m in relief aid

Malawi Red Cross Society has pumped in K41 million to support 620 households affected by Tropical Storm Ana in Ntcheu District with money to help people rebuild their shattered homes.

Speaking on Tuesday during the disbursement of the money, Malawi Red Cross Society president Innocent Majiya said the district is among those seriously affected by the storm in the country.

He said his organisationis giving out cash transfers, ranging from K60 000 to K75 000 to people, depending on the extent of damage caused to their property.

“We have pumped in K41 million to support the affected people get back to their feet,” said Majiya.

Ntcheu district commissioner Francis Mateweresaid the storm killed two people and injured 28 in the district.

He commended Malawi Red Cross Society for the support, saying it came at the right time when people needed support to repair their homes.

One of the beneficiaries, Dyna Dickson, said she will use the money to buy materials to roof her house which suffered damage during the disaster.

She said she lost everything, including food, fertilisers and kitchen utensils.

“The storm blew off the roof of my house and I now sleep in my kitchen along with my grandchildren,” she said.

According to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, the storm killed at least 46 people and injured 158. About 193 558 households or 871 011 people have been affected.

Over 22 174 households have been displaced and 122 camps have been set up in 13 affected councils.
