Refrain from immoral behaviour, youths told

Group village head Mwanganda of Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga has urged the youth in the district to refrain from immoral behaviour to become productive and help the country achieve its long-term development strategy, Malawi 2063 (MW2063).

He said this on Monday at Rukuru Primary School in the district during a sexual and reproductive health (SRH) awareness Mwanganda One Youth Club organised.

Said Mwanganda: “As community leaders and parents, we have formulated by-laws to protect children, especially girls from early marriages.

“We want them to go to school to become productive citizens to help the country achieve its aspirations under the MW2063. However, to achieve this, the youth should refrain from drug and alcohol abuse.”

Mwanganda One Youth Club member Maureen Nyirenda said the event, which started with a big walk and ended with a football and netball bonanza, was part of the activities the club employs to drive the message home to their fellow youths.

She said: “We face a number of challenges such as lack of youth-friendly corners in health facilities and cultural beliefs in accessing SRH services.

“This activity brought together artists who performed poetry, drama, traditional dances whose message focused on SRH.”

On his part, Karonga district youth officer Lapken Liwago commended the club for being in the forefront to demand SRH services.

He said: “We acknowledge that we still have a gap in terms of availability of well-trained SRH providers and youth-friendly corners in our public health facilities,” he said.

“However, we commend Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation for constructing a One-Stop Centre in the district.”

Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation supported the event with funds from Breuckmann Foundation and German Government Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation Development
