Rotary clubs offer free healthcare services

Rotary Family Health Day country coordinator Vincent Sikelo has urged residents in Blantyre to seek healthcare services to know their status.

He made the call on Friday when Limbe and Blantyre rotary clubs offered free healthcare services at Chileka Health Centre.

Sikelo said when people know their health status they are able to seek medical attention in time.

He said: “It is better to screen someone even when they are not sick instead of waiting until a disease strikes.

“So while we are screening and treating people of common ailments, we are also telling them that they should not only go to hospital when they are critically ill but go for regular check-ups.”

Chileka Health Centre in-charge Solomon Jenala said the outreach initiative helped people with different medical conditions access free healthcare services.

“It is indeed important that people should go to hospital to be screened for different medical conditions. For instance, people should get tested for blood pressure, diabetes, cervical cancer and other conditions,” he said.

One of the community members, Rose Nang’anjo, thanked the rotary clubs for the initiative, saying she got tested for blood pressure and knew her condition.

During the three-day outreach initiative, healthcare workers screened people for blood pressure, conducted abdominal and chest checks, offered gynaecological, dental, eye and ear services as well as advised communities on mental health and family planning issues. The healthcare workers also offered nutrition services from under-five children.
