The Department of Disaster Management Affairs has distributed relief food and items to 324 households affected by floods in Salima District.

The floods are a result of heavy rains that have affected lakeshore districts. In Salima, the floods displaced people and damaged houses in traditional authorities (T/As) Ndindi and Kuluunda.

Speaking on Wednesday in T/A Kuluunda, Salima District Council disaster risk management officer Gloria Chinangwa said the relief items will help households recover from their loss.

“It is our belief that the items will uplift the people’s livelihoods following the disaster,” she said.

Chinangwa asked other well-wishers to help the survivors with relief items.

Maganga Ward councillor Kuluunda Asiyatu Chakwera commended Dodma for responding quickly to the disaster.

“People lost their houses and food items, rendering life difficult. We hope the items will lessen their suffering for the time being as we expect more help from other well-wishers,” she said.

Chakwera asked the affected people to move to upland areas as water levels are still rising in the lake.

A survivor Agnes James, said her family lost everything to floods.

She also said she will relocate to safe places to avoid facing the same problem in future.

Kawanga Village Disaster Risk Management Committee chairperson Amina James said they were ensuring that affected households are safe and receive required support.
