Reigning national football champions Silver Strikers have said they will reconsider their decision not to take part in a continental CAF tournament next year.

The development comes barely a month and a half after the club’s chairperson Dr. McDonald Mafuta-Mwale told Weekend Nation that based on their recent sterile performance, they would not consider their sponsor’s offer to take part in the tournament.

However, the club’s general secretary Mike Tembo yesterday said they feel they now have a squad capable of competing at a higher level.

“It is something we feel we can no longer fear because we have now assembled a strong side. I am sure we can give it a try and we will put up a request to the sponsor,” said Tembo.

The Silver GS was referring to four new signings—Lazarus Nyemera and Madalisto Chiumia (Mzuzu United), Charles Chipeta (Mponela) and Thoko Stambuli (Blantyre United).

“We also wanted John Lanjesi, but unfortunately our friends Civo United have refused to release him. Nevertheless, the new players that we have taken on board, have already made an impact,” he said.

He also said the Bankers should not be counted out of the race for the domestic flagship league honours.

“If we can win five or six games, we will be firmly in contention for the third straight league championship,” he said.

In August this year, Mafuta-Mwale said the club’s performance did not demonstrate that they deserve to take part in a continental tournament.

In March this year, Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Charles Chuka, who is the team’s patron, hinted on sponsoring the club’s participation in the continental club showpiece.
