Silver displace Nomands
Silver Strikers returned to the second position of the TNM Super League after labouring to a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Nchalo United at Silver Stadium on Saturday.
The win, courtesy of a Thuso Paipi second-half goal, also ensured that the bankers closed the gap with leaders Nyasa Big Bullets to six points, with 10 games to play.
The bankers, who have 40 points now, lead third-placed Wanderers by a point.
Both sides having played 20 matches.
The victory against a spirited Nchalo was what Silver needed to somewhat lift a cloud of suspense that has been haunting the team on and off the pitch.
Silver have been performing poorly recently, and, last week, suspended their assistant coach Lovemore Fazili and team manager Francis Songo amid an inquest into the team’s poor showing.
“It is a relief that we have won this game. A lot of events have happened, but we are happy to finally put the title dream back on track,” said stand-in assistant coach Peter Mgangira.
Nchalo coach Mcdonald Yobe said he was disappointed that his troops did not salvage a point.
“Only one silly mistake cost us this game. But overall, I think we were able to contain them,” he said.
Nchalo, who anchor the log table with 12 points from 20 games, will seek to recover from the loss when they face Masters Security at Dedza Stadium today.
Elsewhere, Mzuni University (Mzuni) earned 2-0 win over Dwangwa United at Mzuzu Stadium.
Micheal Tetteh and Maxwell Gastin scored for Mzuni.
Both goals were scored in the second-half.
Tetteh netted in the 73rd minute while Gastin scored in the 90th minute.
Despite the win, Mzuni are still in the relegation zone on position 14 with 21 points from 21 games.
Dwangwa are on position 13 with 23 points from 20 games.
Speaking in post-match interview, Mzuni coach Gilbert Chirwa said chances are still high that they will survive in the top-flight league.
“I am happy that we have won today,” he said.
Dwangwa team manager Davie Mwandira accepted the loss, saying Mzuni played well.
“We made defencive mistakes which Mzuni utilised and scored the two goals. It was not our day, otherwise,Mzuni dominated the affair,” he said.
