Silver extend lead
Silver Strikers’ resurgence under their new coach Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda continued yesterday when they beat rookies Creck Sporting Club 2-0 in the TNM Super League at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.
The win saw the Central Bankers creating a three-point lead at the summit of the flagship league.
The Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored outfit now has 16 points from six matches. They have dropped only two points, having won five and drawn once.
Breathing down their neck are Mzuzu City Hammers, who have 13 points following their 1-0 win over Kamuzu Barracks (KB) yesterday at Mzuzu Stadium.
At Silver Stadium, after being frustrated for the better part of the first half, Silver drew first blood through Uchizi Vunga’s 25-yard powerful shot after being set up by captain Chikondi Kamanga just before half-time.
Creck Sporting started the second half at full throttle and nearly levelled the scores in the 52nd minute when Hardy Ng’andu’s shot was kept out by Silver’s ‘keeper George Chikooka.
Midfield workhorse Chimwemwe Idana doubled Silver’s lead in the 61st minute following a move of utter beauty which originated from Chinsisi Maonga who dribbled past three Creck Sporting defenders before setting up Atusaye Nyodo whose effort was blocked before Idana scored from the rebound.
Both teams made a number of changes, but the scoreline remained unchanged.
Idana was named man-of-the-match.
Mponda hailed his charges for playing according to instructions.
He said: “We dominated possession, but we could not create enough chances. All the same, we made good use of the chances we created.
“Having said that, as I keep on saying, we still have a long way to go. We will be taking a game at a time.”
On his part, Creck Sporting coach MacDonald Mtetemera attributed the defeat to loss of concentration.
“We have not won in four matches now, but our fans should not worry, we will turn the corner. We will work on our shortfalls,” he said.
At Mzuzu Stadium, Isaac Msiska scored the lone goal for Hammers that ended KB’s unbeaten run.
Msiska was also named man-of-the-match.
In another match, Mighty Tigers and PremierBet Dedza Dynamos drew one-all.
