Sulom warns local clubs on subvention
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has warned TNM Super League clubs that they risk losing subvention which they get from world football governing body Fifa through Football Association of Malawi (FAM) for failing to liquidate the funding.
The clubs get K20 million subvention each, of which K10 million is from Fifa grants while the other half comes from league sponsors TNM plc.

However, some clubs have not been liquidating the funding as per Fifa requirement, which may result in the loss of future Fifa funding.
The delay in submitting accountability reports has also held back the release of the remaining balance, with some teams left with a maximum of eight matches before the 2025 league concludes.
According to communication we have seen, Sulom president Gilbert Mittawa has appealed to the clubs to comply with the requirements.
He said: “Colleagues, I come again on this matter with a serious concern. Fifa has issued a warning that they will not be providing the subvention funds if clubs will not liquidate the same.
“This is in line with set governance regulations and standards. As such, may I kindly appeal to all that tisamangodandaula [Let’s not complain] of delays, but let us also do the needful.”
Mittawa gave the clubs up to November 14 2025, which has already elapsed, to liquidate the funding already disbursed.
He said: “For now, let us liquidate the first tranche. Much as the amount might seem small to others, you may agree with me that it is nevertheless substantial. Chonde [please] let us do our part.
“If you have challenges in liquidating the subvention funds, kindly seek assistance so that you can comply. As a matter of guidance, let us all liquidate by COB [close of business] Friday, November 14 2025.”
Mittawa’s appeal follows complaints from some clubs about delays in receiving the remaining subvention tranche.
Chairperson of one of the clubs wrote to Sulom to seek an update: ”Good afternoon, bwana president. I trust you are doing well. Having looked at the number of games each team has played so far, I felt it would be ideal for your esteemed office to update the house on the way forward regarding the subvention balances.
“Some teams are left with as few as six matches to conclude the league, and an update at this juncture would be timely and highly appreciated. Given the current financial challenges that most clubs are facing, clarity on the subvention funds would provide much needed relief and allow teams to plan effectively as they complete the season. Such communication would also demonstrate transparency and shared commitment between your office and the clubs.”
Sulom vice-general secretary Donnex Chilonga in an interview confirmed the delays in disbursing the remaining tranche was due to the clubs’ failure to liquidate.
On his part, FAM competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka in an interview said without liquidation, clubs cannot access funding.
He said: “All Fifa funds are on comply-and-access basis. It is not just the clubs. All our affiliates are expected to liquidate to access funding.”
