Sweet revenge for Silver

Listen to this article

Silver Strikers yesterday avenged the 1-0 defeat they suffered at the hands of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the first-round of the TNM Super League by the same margin at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The Nomads’ first round win at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, ended the Bankers’ 11-match unbeaten run in the top-flight league, but it was pay-back time yesterday.

Midfield workhorse Chimwemwe Idana, who was named man-of-the-match, struck the lone goal in the 83rd minute after an exchange of neat passes, leading to striker Atusaye Nyondo setting up Idana to break the deadlock with a powerful shot.

Following the win, Silver have moved a step up to third position with 43 points from 24 matches while the Nomads still top the 16-team flagship football league’s table with 47 points from 25 matches.

It was a setback for the Nomads in their quest to revive their title aspirations.

In a match that ebbed and flowed, the Nomads dominated the first stanza while the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored outfit were in control of the second half.

Both teams created a number of chances, especially the hosts, but they failed to convert them.

In a post-match interview, Nomads coach Mark Harrison admitted that it is now tight for his team in their title aspirations.

He said: “We have thrown it [the match] away. Five or six minutes ago, we have given away another silly goal just like last week

“It’s tight now as we have to depend on Bullets to drop points.

“It has been our story all season because if we fail to win the league ,it will be because we are failing to take our chances.”

His Silver counterpart Pieter De Jongh said they deserved to win as they were a better team.

“We played well, we dominated possession and it is important that we won, but the league is still open,” he said.

In other matches. Chitipa United missed a chance to go second on the table when they allowed Blue Eagles to snatch a late equaliser and force a two-all draw at Karonga Stadium.

The cops took the lead through Kingsley Kuwali, but the hosts pulled level through Jacob Robert’s own goal in the 36th minute.

Nkhalamu Zga ku Chitipa then went on to take the lead in the 41st minute via Jack Beza from a free-kick.

But just when it looked like Chitipa would carry the day, Eagles equalised through Hendrix Misinde.

Chitipa have now dropped from third to fourth position with 43 points from 24 matches.

Elsewhere, Civil Service United and Red Lions played out a goalless draw.
