Tabitha thrilled to qualify for Champs League group stage
France-based Malawian women’s football star Tabitha Chawinga says she was thrilled with her team Paris Saint Germain’s (PSG) qualification into the Uefa Women’s Champions League group stage on Wednesday night after ousting Manchester United 4-2 on aggregate.
PSG punched their ticket following their 3-1 win in Paris in the reverse fixture. The two teams played out a one-all draw in the first leg.
She said: “It was a great feeling knowing that we had sealed our slot in the group stages, which I reckon will be a great experience.
“We fought really hard as a team and playing in the group stages will be a great experience.
“It’s a different stage whereby the cream of Europe competes at the highest level and to be part of that will be an honour.
“I thank Almighty God for His blessings.”
In Wednesday’s match, Tabitha nearly scored in the early stages, but her effort was cleared on the goal line.
She did, however, set up the first goal for PSG in the 17th minute, when she went on a mazy run on the left flank before setting up Lieke Martens to slot the ball home.
United pulled level in the 47th minute through Lisa Naalsund.
But a minute later, the on-fire Martines claimed a brace to put the Parisians back in front before Sandy Baltimore put the game beyond the visitors reach by scoring the third.
Tabitha scored PSG’s first goal in the first leg.
The draw for the group stages is scheduled for tomorrow.
