Team Malawi bags 3 gold medals at Region 5 Games

Team Malawi yesterday won three gold medals at the Ausc Region 5 Youth Games in Swakopmund, Namibia.

The first was through Special Olympics athlete Nancy Anastanzio Verani in the 100 metres.

 She crossed the finish line in an impressive 14.23 seconds ahead of her second-placed compatriot Tiyanjane Henry, clocked 14.55 seconds to claim silver.

Team Malawi then bagged the second gold in girls’ E-football through Pretoria Kalimba, who defeated Zimbabwean Judith Makina 2-0.

In an interview, Kalimba said she was excited to win gold.

“I will cherish this moment for the rest of my life,” she said.

David Masiye claimed another gold in boys’ E-football after seeing off Zimbabwean Deardays Dumbu 3-1.

It was a bumper day for Team Malawi as Boyson Maseko also won a silver medal while Wongani Wilton Chawinga in the 400m T13 Para-Athletics.

Another medal went to Lawrence Mpulula  who won bronze in Judo.

The tally of medals for Malawi was  13 at press time.

Malawi National Council of Sports director of sports and recreation development Ivy Chinangwa said they are hoping for more medals from last edition’s 44.

Meanwhile, Malawi Under-19 Girls’ National  Volleyball Team comprising Prisca Mwankonda, Priscilla Bandawe, Stellia Kamzati and Elvin Msango, yesterday also registered its fourth successive victory following a 3-0 win over Botswana in indoor volleyball at Showground Sports Plaza.

The victory saw them storming into the semi-finals.

The results followed their hard-fought 2-3 victory over Lesotho on Tuesday when they showed characteristic grit to come from two sets down before turning the tables around.

Cheered on by the  Under-20 boys football team which had an off day after their 2-0 win over hosts Namibia, the girls’ volleyball side won the first and second sets 25-15 and 25-18  before wrapping it up with a 25-21 win.

Coach Simbani Banda praised his players for their fighting spirit.

He said:  “It was a very tough much and the girls displayed strong resilience.”

In basketball, the girls’ Under-16 team recovered from a 63-50 loss to South Africa on Wednesday to beat Botswana 61-45.
