China-based Malawi women’s football star Temwa Chawinga says she will not renew her contract with Superleague side Wuhan Jiangda as she eyes a move to major European Leagues to explore new challenges.

The Scorchers prolific forward said in an interview on Monday that after four successful seasons with the Chinese women’s national champions, it was time to move.

She said: “I would like to face new challenges elsewhere, especially Europe when my current contract with Wuhan Jiangda expires this December.

“This is my fourth season here and since I joined Wuhan, we have won the title three consecutive times and we are chasing a fourth one. I need new challenges.”

The 24-year-old currently leads the scorers chart in the Chinese women’s top-flight league with 20 goals and also won the 2023 Chinese Women’s National Cup with six goals.

Temwa said there are few offers from Europe that her manager is assessing.

She said: “My manager tells me that Real Madrid [of Spain] and a French club have made enquiries and negotiations are currently underway, but there is nothing concrete yet.

In an interview yesterday, Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili echoed the player’s views that she needs new challenges.

He said: “She needs to move on and face other challenges and secure a deal with any of the top league clubs in Europe. This will  help her get a real test of her pedigree.

“She has won the league thrice in a row and the fourth is on the cards. She has also won other personal accolades in both league and cups. So, she definitely needs a new lease of life.”

Temwa joined Wuhan from Swedish second-tier league side Kvarnsvedens IK in 2020 where she was joined by her sister Tabitha the following season from Jiangsu Suning.

Tabitha, who spent last season on loan at Italian Serie A Giants Inter Milan, is back at her parent club in China after becoming the first African to win the golden boot with 23 goals from 21 games.
