Temwa raises funds for fresh water project
US-based Malawi women’s football sensation Temwa Chawinga yesterday raised funds for Freshwater Project at CPKC Stadium in Kansas, USA.
The National Women’s Super League (NWSL) outfit Kansas City (KC) Current forward, who is also Freshwater Project International brand ambassador, is using her stardom in the US to raise awareness on the plight of Malawi’s rural areas that lack access to fresh water.
Freshwater Project International serves as implementing partner for a comprehensive water, sanitation and hygiene programme in schools.
Freshwater Project International executive director Heidi Rickels in a statement said they partnered Veterans Without Orders and the Sawyer Foundation, to raise fund for the Wash (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Project in Schools programme.
A similar fundraising event will take be held in Washington DC in January.
Rickels said apart from being a star on the pitch, Temwa is also doing great things for Malawi youth as their brand ambassador.
She said: “In her breakout season with the KC Current, Temwa has captivated the National Women’s Soccer League, dazzling fans with her unmatched athleticism, fierce heart, and record-breaking skill.
“With electrifying speed and goal-scoring prowess, she’s become both a standout on the field and a cherished role model off it. Temwa’s fearless play and joyful spirit inspire young women and girls across Africa and beyond to dream big and keep moving forward.
“We acknowledge that our ripple effect can surge exponentially with the currents of influential figures who share our passion for positive social change for youth in Malawi. In this light, we chose Malawian soccer sensation Temwa Chawinga to represent Freshwater as brand ambassador to amplify our efforts and impact.
“Temwa’s journey from a humble rural family to the global stage of professional soccer showcases the power of perseverance and resilience.
“As a proud Malawian, she is passionate about her country and committed to making a difference in the lives of its Youth. Together, we aim to raise awareness about Malawi’s Wash needs and inspire action.”
In her debut season at KC Current, Temwa, who was named 2024 Most Valuable Player (MVP) has won the NWSL Golden Boot with a record 20 goals, scoring against all 13 teams.
The Scorchers forward, who joined KC Current from Chinese club Wuhan Jiangda, attributed her success to team work.
