Temwa’s manager playsdown goal ‘drought’

US-based women’s football sensation Temwa Chawinga’s manager Theana Msolomba has played down the player’s failure to score in three consecutive matches, saying she will bounce back.

After scoring in eight consecutive matches for her National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Kansas City (KC) Current, the Scorchers forward did not score in the last three matches against San Diego Wave, and Houston Dash which they by 2-0 margins as well as in their 3-2 defeat to NC Courage.

In an interview on Thursday, Msolomba said: “Nothing to stress. She started out like this last season too.

Champions just figure it out and bounce back. NWSL teams have done some home work on her, but Temwa is driven by challenges. A master of adaptation and elevating.”

Msolomba said Malawians should rally behind their star.

“As a country, we should stand by her side to support her evolution. Constantly reminding Temwa [that she hasn’t scored in] three games doesn’t change her being a champion.”

The 26-year-old prolific forward had a chance to get back on the score sheet this morning when KC Current faced Seatle Reign.

Temwa, who broke the all-time scoring record in a single season by scoring 20 goals last season, last scored in a 3-0 victory over Utah Royals on March 30.

The 2023 world’s overall top scorer, also won the Most Valuable Player Award.

Before today’s match, Temwa had scored three goals, four behind leading scorer Esther Gonzalez of Gotham FC and a goal behind joint second leading scorers Zambian Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride and Ashley Hatch of Washington Spirit.

As of yesterday, KC Current led the 14-team league with 15 points from six matches, having won five and lost once.
