Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) general secretary Saulos Thindwa was appointed African Confederation of Cue Sport acting president; the only good news emerging at the end of 2013 All Africa Pool Association (Aapa) Championship in Blantyre on Saturday.

“At our annual general meeting on Thursday [in Blantyre], the African Confederation of Cue Sport, a governing body that involves pool, snooker and nine-ball, Saulos Thindwa was appointed acting president until next elections,” Aapa tournament director Rick Schoenlank announced at Robin’s Park.

That proved to be the only solace of the night. At the end of the five-day biggest continental pool event, it was a case of an elegant venue, beautiful models cat-walking in the hall, but no worthwhile medals for Malawi.

Winning women category bronze medals on their debut was the only consolation for Malawi; otherwise, South Africa clinched honours for women category while Zambia danced their way to men’s pool championship.

The visitors were more at home as Natalie Kwong of South Africa was the number one seed among women team event whereas her compatriot Yazeed Salie got that honour for men.

For the men, Tanzania clinched bronze, South Africa silver while Lesotho took women category silver.

In the individual men’s section, Moses Mofya of Zambia won bronze, South African Vishen Jadgev bagged silver with Tanzanian Patrick Nyangusi becoming the best of the men.

Nicola Rossouw was named the best in individual women section followed by compatriot Kwong, then yet another South African Nicole Moosmuller.

Closing the championship, Mapa vice-president Chikondi Mbewe described the event as a learning experience in view of the home teams’ challenges such as lack of equipment, inexperience and poor preparations “but tomorrow is another day.”
