TNM has paid K550 000 (US$1 486) to Morton Mwafulirwa of Rumphi to cover funeral expenses for his deceased dear wife, the first such payment under the company’s Mpamba Moyo Cover life insurance policy exclusive to the network’s customers.

The claim covers for Emmie Cynthia Mwafulirwa who died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre recently after being taken ill suddenly.

“I am very grateful to TNM for providing the cover. They paid it within 24 hours of being notified of my predicament. I was in Rumphi mourning my wife when I received an SMS [short message service] notifying me that more than half a million had been credited in my Mpamba account,” said Mwafulirwa during a media briefing on Tuesday.

Explaining his ordeal, Mwafulirwa said his wife had gone to the hospital for a routine check-up when her condition deteriorated unexpectedly around 1600 hours and doctors admitted her.

“Everything was unexpected and shocking. She passed away around 2300 hours that same day and the following morning, I began to process the cover. The news left me helpless and devastated; although I was in doubt, I was relieved that TNM officials responded promptly and expressed their condolences when I called them,” he said.

TNM head of marketing Sobhuza Ngwenya said the pay-out to Mwafulirwa is testimony of the mobile phone company’s commitment to serve its customers in time of need.

“Through our Mpamba Moyo Cover, we will always be with our customers in times of sorrow. Wherever our customers are and no matter their circumstances, TNM will always be with them,” he said.
