JTI Leaf Malawi Limited says it is keen to support processes aimed at strengthening policy and regulation affecting its operating environment.

The company’s regulatory affairs manager, Harold Msusa, said this in a statement made available to Business News at the end of a two-day Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) seminar held jointly with the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) in Lilongwe.

“At JTI, we believe that an effective RIA regime will strengthen Malawi’s regulatory capacities, improve dialogue between private and public sector and enhance business and trade performance,” he said.

Msusa said RIA is a highly adaptable policy analysis method used in a wide range of administrative contexts to help regulators make right choices in developing economies.

He said JTI decided to facilitate the seminar in line with its strategy of adding value to the country’s tobacco industry which is undergoing various regulatory and policy reviews.

“We support these ongoing reviews as we believe that they will create reciprocal benefits, not only in the tobacco value chain, but across the economy as tobacco industry impacts various sectors. JTI wants to precipitate a win-win environment for all involved,” he said.

The seminar was facilitated by Scott Jacobs of Jacob’s, Cordova & Associates, an award-winning international regulatory firm that has helped solve regulatory problems in over 80 countries.

It attracted principal secretaries, chief executive officers of Tobacco Control Commission (TCC), Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), and other senior government officials at director level.
