Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) is mourning the death of its vice-general secretary Getrude Sanjale who gave the domestic sport semblance of gender sensitivity.

One of the pioneer boxing judges, umpire and coach, Sanjale died after an illness on Monday at Daeyang Luke Hospital in Lilongwe where she was admitted to, Maba vice-president Henry Sakala said on day.

“I cannot say much about her personal background. Our biggest concern is that we have lost a dedicated general secretary. She looked fine and served in the preparations for the mini-Olympic Games but did not come for the actual games,” said Sakala.

Sanjale’s burial was expected yesterday at her home area in Kabwafu, Lilongwe. The late Sanjale also served in Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) technical committee. She officiated high-profile international bouts involving Osgood Kayuni and Agnes Mtimaukanena.

Sanjale leaves behind Salome Manyau as the other well-known female boxing official locally.
