Transfer window closes today

TNM Super League clubs face a race against time to complete player transfers with the  window set to close at midnight today.

Among the teams that are still trying to negotiate for new players are Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

The Central Bankers’ coach Pieter De Jhong told a press conference on Thursday that they cannot win the league title unless they beef up their squad during the current transfer window.

But with barely hours before the transfer window closes, the club said their coach should not panic over the issue as they are working on that.

Said Silver’s company secretary Peter Masiye in an interview: “He [De Jhong] should not worry. He can be rest assured that we are working at meeting request to sign a couple of new players.”

He said De Jhong wants a left-back, at least two strikers and a midfielder.

De Jhong: I need more players

However, Masiye could not be drawn to disclose the identities of the players they are chasing.

During the press conference, De Jhong said: “Without new players, we cannot win the league. We have injuries and suspensions and this is affecting the team’s performance. I have good relationship with my players and support staff, but I still need new players.

“Coaches like [Liverpol’s] Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City’s] Pep Guardiola are always given opportunity to buy players they prefer. So, I have one new player George Chaomba we bought from Mighty [Waka Waka] Tigers. He has brought about lots of possibilities, but I need more.”

Meanwhile, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers coach Mark Harrison has said they are also planning to rope in a few new players apart from midfielder Francisco Madinga, who has rejoined them after a stint with Botswana side Galaxy.

He said: “There are a couple of players that we are chasing, but we have got no confirmation yet.”

On his part, FCB Nyasa Bullets chief administration officer Albert Chigoga said they have no immediate plans to beef up their squad.

Super League of Malawi general secretary Williams Banda said in an interview yesterday that details of the window transactions will be released through a press statement in due course.

“However, the window has picked up in terms of transfer transactions,” he said.
