He said: “We have embarked on a pilot project for this year that will feed into a longer project for 2027-2031, designed to promote access to quality early childhood education.

“The training seeks to build their knowledge and skills on how to use play methodologies in our early childhood education and how to develop learning materials from locally available resources.”

Kamaliza said they noted through their research that some caregivers were untrained and the majority is not on government payroll.

Salima district principal education officer Eliam Banda commended TUM for organising the training.

He said: “TUM and the government are partners in education and share the same vision in improving the standard of education across the country.

“So, this training is important

to complement government’s efforts to improve early childhood education.”

One of the participants, Eliness Banda from Bitchayi Early Childhood Education Centre, said the training will build her capacity to handle children well.

“Some of us lacked opportunities to undergo such training,” she said.
