Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan says her government will soon revamp the Dar es Salaam Port to curb inefficiencies.

Chakwera explains to Hassan, from Kapeni View, the Cycle Freddy devastation in Soche Hill

She said: “I wish to assure the Malawi business community that delays, mishandling and other inefficiencies will be a thing of the past. We welcome you to continue using the Dar es Salaam Port as your port of choice.”

She said during their discussions they observed that despite the historic bonds and excellent diplomatic relations between Malawi and Tanzania, the trade ties between the two countries do not match with their political relations.

Against such a background, Hassan said they family.”

President Chakwera also hailed Hassan’s visit which he said will benefit the people of both Malawi and Tanzania.

He further expressed optimism that the relations between the two countries will continue to be strengthened with agreements that have been made.

Prior to holding the media briefing, the two leaders visited Kapeni View to appreciate the extent of damage caused by Cyclone Freddy which made a landfall in southern Malawi on March 12 2023.

The cyclone triggered mudslides, floods and heavy rainfall which destroyed numerous infrastructure, killed 676 people and injured 2 171 others.

While 537 people are still considered missing, the cyclone also displaced 659 278 people and affected 63 health facilities.

These displaced people were living in 747 evacuation camps, some of which have been decommissioned.

In the aftermath of the devastation caused by the cyclone, Tanzania was the first country that helped Malawi with $1 million and relief items.
