The United Democratic Front (UDF) Northern Region Committee has donated sanitary pads and school socks to needy primary and secondary school learners in Mzuzu.

Speaking on Tuesday after the handover at Chibavi Primary School and Chibavi Community Day Secondary School, UDF vice-president Victoria Mponela said menstrual hygiene is one area that has not been given attention in the country.

She said most young girls fail to go to school during their menses.

Said Mponela: “We mobilised to buy sanitary pads and socks for needy girls to motivate them to work hard.

“The donation was part of commemorating the World’s Menstrual Hygiene Day that falls on May 28.”

She said they will visit other schools in the region with the same support.

Chibavi Primary School deputy head teacher Towera Mumbo said sanitary pads are essential to the girl child.  She said: “Mind you most of girls end up missing classes when they are in period.

“We appreciate the gesture by the party because it will help needy girls to attend classes during their menses.”
