A group of US-based Malawians and citizens from other Sadc countries Zimbabwe and Zambia called Sadc Alliance has donated groceries worth K700 000 to seven households affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy Blantyre.

The items to each household comprised 20 kilogram maize, five litre cooking oil, a crate of eggs, four packets of sugar, a carton of laundry soap, luxury soap, candles, match box, salt and tea leaves.

They delivered the items to five households at Manja Camp and two in Mbayani Township Blantyre through Alfred Lungu.

In an interview, one of the Alliance members Vitu Bazale Nyirenda said they felt obliged to support after learning the devastation the cyclone caused in the Southern part of the country.

“We felt a great need to help our brothers and sisters, who are suffering after the devastating storm,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries at Manja Camp Idah Richard said she was grateful to the group for the timely support.

Richard is staying at the camp with her year-old son after the storm washed away her house and claimed lives of her husband and three children.
