Wants the prophet in court: Kasambara

A Blantyre-based prophet, the former Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Ralph Kasambara mentioned in court on Monday as a likely witness, has said he does not know what the attempted murder suspect wants him in court for.

Kasambara, besides mentioning President Joyce Banda and Information Minister Brown Mpinganjira as some of his witnesses, also mentioned Prophet Elias as his witness.

The prophet, full name Elias Mussa Gama, said in an interview yesterday that he would respect the laws of Malawi if summoned to go to court and testify.

Gama said: “But honestly, I don’t know what Mr Kasambara wants me for; I don’t know the kind of evidence he is looking from me.

“But what I know is that Mr Kasambara has been coming to my church, Prophet Elias Ministry Church, to pray with us for the past five weeks. As of now, I cannot say anything until the time I appear in court.”

In another development, State House press secretary Steve Nhlane told Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) yesterday that President Banda was shocked to learn that Kasambara wanted her as his witness.

He did not say whether the President would respect court summons or not if summoned.

Kasambara was arrested last Friday and charged with attempted murder of former Treasury budget director Paul Mphwiyo.

Mphwiyo’s shooting was later connected to massive looting of public funds in billions of kwacha at Capital Hill in Lilongwe by public servants.

A magistrate’s court in Lilongwe committed to the High Court the Kasambara case and that of Pika Manondo, also arrested in connection to the shooting.
