Wolrec gives cyclone survivors K22.5m items
Women’s Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec) has donated K22.5 million worth of items to local structures and Cyclone Freddy survivors in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kuntaja in Blantyre District.
The items include 348 chitetezo mbaula, 1 000 solar lamps, 1 000 fuel briquettes, 100 phones and 50 bicycles.
Speaking in an interview on Monday during the function, Wolrec project officer Ernest Mujavo said local structures such as area civil protection committees, community victim support units and village civil protection committees received phones and bicycles to ease their mobility when working to fight against gender-based violence (GBV) among cyclone survivors in the area.

“We are supporting service providers to be able to refer GBV cases to relevant stakeholders at either community or district level,” he said.
Mujavo said besides the donation, the organisation is conducting sensitisation campaigns on how communities can identify and report GBV.
Chief Kuntaja of Blantyre District commended Wolrec for the donation, saying the survivors needed support.
“Most importantly, the local structures will now be able to lead the fight against GBV efficiently because they have bicycles and phones. As traditional leaders, we will support them to eliminate the vice,” he said.
One of the cyclone survivors, Liyiteni William, said she lost everything during the disaster.
“The items will go a long way in supporting my family as we work hard to recover from the disaster,” she said.
With funding from UN Women, Wolrec is implementing Cure GBV Project targeting Cyclone Freddy survivors in group village heads Bwanasompho and Chigonawaya in T/A Kuntaja in the district.
