Women aspirants urged to create sound manifestoes

Manyamula Ward councillor Kefasi Chisi (Malawi Congress Party) has urged women aspirants in Mzimba District to formulate good campaign manifestos.

She said this on Monday during a meeting which Women’s Legal Resource Centre (Wolrec) and Oxfam in Malawi organised in the district with various political party representatives.

Chisi: Initiative is good

Said Chisi: “The initiative to fund campaigns for women, youths and people with disabilities is good, but it is not enough to win an election.

“Women aspirants should come up with brilliant manifestoes that will clearly outline what they want to do after assuming office. Voters no longer go for money but what the candidate offers.”

She said many female aspirants fear competition from men; hence, the need to convince voters through good manifestoes.

Wolrec programme manager Charity Mazengela said the European Union-funded Demokalase Yokomela Aliyense project seeks to support women, youths and people with disabilities contesting in the September 16 2025 General Elections.

“Through this intervention, we will be able to provide assistance to targeted groups, including transportation during the campaign,” she said.

Mazengela said they will only support candidates who will be able to pay nomination fees.

Mzimba district gender officer Naomi Mwale hailed the intervention, saying Mzimba has few women, youths and people with disabilities in elected positions.

“Out of 11 members of Parliament, we have two female lawmakers while out of 22 councillors, we have only two female councillors. We hope the project will help to increase the number of women representation,” she said.
