Women march against undressing in Karonga
Women in Karonga on Tuesday took to the street to march against unknown bicycle operators who in November this year allegedly undressed women wearing trousers and miniskirts.
The marchers, who carried placards and chanted songs against the malpractice, delivered their petition to Karonga district commissioner (DC) and Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare.
In the petition, Karonga Women Forum executive director Funny Mwakaye asked government to intervene and ensure that those involved in the malpractice are brought to book before January 31 next year.
“We are surprised because the police keep saying they are investigating the issue, but up to now no one has been arrested.
“Women continue to face increased gender-based violence in the district, but it takes much time for them to see justice. We ask the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to help us by introducing mobile courts in hard to reach areas so that women can be assisted,” she said.
Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Novicha condemned the malpractice.
“It was very unfortunate to hear that women were undressed for putting on mini-skirts. Our country cannot develop if we choose to leave behind women. They need to be respected.
“I urge police to investigate quickly and ensure the culprits face the law,” she said.
