Minister of Local Government Blessings Chinsinga says vibrant and democratic local government authorities are key in strengthening projects that seek to redefine social protection by engaging community members to transform their livelihoods.

He said this yesterday when he presided over the handover of 13 vehicles and 31 motorcycles to 11 district councils and Community Savings and Investment Promotion (Comsip) in Lilongwe.

The vehicles donated to district councils

Chinsinga said the vehicles and motorcycles will help the beneficiaries to effectively implement a $136 million (about MK112bn) five-year Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project (SSRLP).

He said: “The SSRLP aims to improve resilience among the poor and vulnerable population as well as to strengthen the national platform for safety nets.

“It is aligned to the 2018-2023 Malawi National Social Programme II which provides an overarching framework for social protection.”

Chinsinga said the SSRLP is built among consumption support, resilient livelihoods, shock sensitive social protection, linkages between safety nets and other programmes and strengthened safety net delivery systems.

The minister asked councils to take care of the vehicles.

National Local Government Finance Committee board chairperson commissioner Richard Chapweteka said he believes that the SSRLP will benefit Malawians and that his organisation is ready to support the programme.

With funding from the World Bank, government is implementing the SSRLP through National Local Government Finance Committee, Ministry of local Government, Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and local authorities.
