Youths urged to promote peace
Centre for Social Concern has appealed to youths in Nkhata Bay District to help build peace and unity ahead of the September 16 2025 General Elections.
The organisation’s programmes manager Tobias Jere said this on Wednesday during a football bonanza they organised at Maganga ground in the district.
He said youths are prone to be used by politicians to perpetrate political violence.
Jere said: “As you know that there will be campaign rallies, we are working towards building peace to ensure free and fair election and youths are one of our key stakeholders because they can be used by politicians to promote their agenda.”
He said it was important that youths refrain from any act that can fuel political violence.
“We expect mindset change among the youth because some of them are voters and we want them to speak messages of peace,” said Jere.
Nkhata Bay YouthNet and Counselling Organisation coordinator Michael Mwanachawa, who is also the district’s Peace and Unity Committee secretary, said peace building was crucial in promoting development.
“I expect the youth to take the message of peace and relay it to others,” he said.
Nkhata Bay district sports officer Ellen Sibande-Ngwala commended the organisation for using sports to disseminate information to the youth.
“Sport brings many people together, as such, the message on peace has reached out to many youths,” she said.
The organisation also engaged the clergy and chiefs in the district on the need to maintain peace
