2.4m register in second phase, final stage opens
Malawi Electoral Commission has announced that 2 422 595 people registered during the second phase of voter registration for the September 16 2025 General Elections and the exercise enters the final stage today.
The number of people registered in the second phase is in sharp contrast to the National Statistical Office (NSO) projection of 3 963 148 and represents a 61 percent turnout.
The second phase covered Likoma, Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, Kasungu, Kasungu Municipality, Ntcheu, Mchinji, Dowa, Blantyre, Blantyre City, Thyolo, Zomba City and Luchenza.
In the first phase, MEC registered 2 224 307 against the projected figure of 3 423 066 going by NSO data, representing a 60 percent response.
The first phase covered Balaka, Chiradzulu, Chitipa, Dedza, Karonga, Machinga, Mulanje, Neno, Nkhotakota, Ntchisi, Phalombe and Salima district councils, Karonga Town and Mzuzu City.
Meanwhile, the third and final phase of registration started yesterday with MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja registering at Tsokankanasi in Lilongwe.
“I have registered to demonstrate that it is the duty and right of every eligible voter to register. I also urge all stakeholders, including the media, to mobilise people to register and vote next year,” said the High Court of Malawi.
In the past weeks, individual politicians and their political parties have been rallying people to go and register for the forthcoming elections.
The third phase will run from November 28 to December 11, covering Mzimba, Lilongwe Rural, Lilongwe City, Mangochi, Mangochi Municipality, Mwanza, Chikwawa and Nsanje.
Unlike in the first and second phases, National Registration Bureau officials are present at each registration centre to help in identifying eligible voters and those who do .
