763 police officers get promotions

Malawi Police Service has promoted 763 officers to different ranks, the highest number at one go since the promotion of about 7 000 junior police officers ahead of the 2019 Tripartite Elections.

Malawi Police director of human resource management and development Dennis Chipao said in a staff communication that the promotions were with effect from February 24 2023.

The promotions comprise one commissioner, five deputy commissioners, four assistant commissioners, 22 senior superintendents, 157 superintendents, 45 assistant superintendents, 420 inspectors, 100 sub-inspectors and eight sergeants.

Kalaya: We congratulate
the officers

In an interview yesterday, National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed the promotion of the 763 police officers, but could not give more details, saying the memo was an internal communication.

“As a service, we are happy and congratulate the officers that have been promoted to different ranks,” he said.

The new promotions come against a background of an unresolved conflict between Malawi Police and 63 of its officers who are demanding promotions after upgrading their qualifications.

However, only four of the 63 officers have been considered for the promotions.

In October last year, 63 police officers sued MPS through the Attorney General over delays to promote them after successfully completing their self-upgrading studies.

In 2019, MPS promoted about 7 000 junior police officers, citing reduced crime rate as a motivation for the development. The other promotions were in December 2021 where 256 officers were promoted.
