79th Blantyre derby promises fireworks
Sparks are set to fly this afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium as the country’s football giants, FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Wanderers, lock horns in what promises to be a pulsating 79th TNM Super League Blantyre derby.
It’s more than just three points at stake as bragging rights, pride and history are on the line in Malawi’s biggest football spectacle.

The Nomads walked away 1-0 victors in the first-round meeting, and remarkably, they remain the only unbeaten side this season.
The People’s Team, meanwhile, have since dusted themselves off from that early stumble as well as defeats to Civil Service United and Blue Eagles, to reclaim top spot on the log.
Heading into today’s showdown, Bullets lead the standings with 49 points, four ahead of their blue rivals, who sit second.
Despite his side’s resurgent form, Bullets head coach Peter Mponda has chosen humility over pride.
“We know we are playing a team which hasn’t lost. A good team, coached by a good coach.”
But the tactician admitted that they head into the match a different side from that which lost to the Nomads.
“First round they beat us 1-0. We were very bad. We were lukcy to escape with a 1-0 loss. Now, I believe that the team is matured, the team has jelled. That time we were meeting them, we were just maybe, I would say, forcing things.
“But now the players understand how I want them to play. I believe that we are meeting them at a good time. The boys are believing in themselves”
Mponda, however, warned against getting carried by recent results.
“Everyone knows that this season we are saying that we want to rebuild the team after losing a lot of our players. We have been lucky that in the process of rebuilding the team, we are also managing to get results.”
Across the city divide, Wanderers are equally charged up following their 3-1 away demolition of Blue Eagles in midweek, result that reinforced their championship credentials.
Their head coach Bob Mpinganjira, a veteran of many derbies both as player and coach, exuded quiet confidence ahead of the clash.
“We are ready for it. All preparations have gone well. We just have to plan our game well and see what happens. Our aim is to win the TNM Super League title and for us to do that, we need to keep winning games, including this one,” he said.
The tactician however, said they anticipate a tought game depsite dominating Bullets in the first leg.
With Kamuzu Stadium expected to be a sea of red and blue, emotions will run high and every tackle, pass and shot will carry the weight of city’s pride.
For Bullets, all eyes will be on in-form striker Hassan Kajoke, whose poise and precision in front of goal has been central to their resurgence.
His combination with Ephraim Kondowe and Babatunde Adepoju has given Bullets a lethal attacking edge while Peter Banda and Chikumbutso Salima’s creativity and work rate on the flanks sets the tempo.
On the Wanderers side, middle turf kingpin Blessings Singini, Wisdom Mpinganjira and Isaac Kaliyati’s pace and trickery on the wings could cause serious trouble for the Bullets fullbacks.
First round goal scorer Blessings Mwalilino’s flair and ability to unlock tight defences, also remains a key creative spark for the Nomads.
