Speaking during a prize presentation ceremony, Acacia captain Lamuel Chikungwa said his team was so excited to win the qualifiers twice in a row.

He said: “Thank you parents for your support and thank you sponsors for always being there for us… Many thanks to the organisers. Today we have won and are so excited about it.”

Two public schools—Mwenekondo and Mbuka primary schools—also took part in the event and finished third and fourth, respectively.

Head of the sports desk in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Denis Kumwenda thanked Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) for the Golf in School Project and for extending a hand to public schools.

“When I had a meeting with Dingaan Chirwa from GUoM secretariat, I was so excited with the inclusion of public schools and the ministry is very excited too.

“We now have two public schools’ teams competing in the Central Region, but it is our hope that you will extend the invitation to a lot more schools this year,” he said.

ACL  business development officer Pacharo Makaniankhondo, who is also in charge of marketing, said ACL will always be part of golf development because their business is about investment “and that investment is about the future”.

He said: “We believe in the future and the future is the junior golfers in our midst. As ACL, we are here to stay, trust me. Congratulations to the winners and may I urge all of you to continue working very hard.” The next and final qualifier will be sometime in March where the top two schools from the centre and top three from southern region will compete for the top prize.
