Ndala: It is still being investigated

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is investigating the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) over undisclosed amount of unaccounted for money in its latest move to unearth the dirt at Capital Hill.

Our sources peg the figures in billions, but ACB refused to give details.

In a response to a written questionnaire, ACB senior public relations officer Egrita Ndala yesterday said the bureau was in the process of analysing documents in relation to these investigations.

Said Ndala: “The ACB has been conducting investigations in a number of Government Departments, including the Malawi Defence Force since last month.

“Since the matter is still being investigated, it would be premature for the bureau to divulge more information about this investigation for fear of prejudicing the investigation process.”

Since the shooting of budget director Paul Mphwiyo last month, allegations of massive looting of public resources by high-profile government officials and politicians have surfaced, prompting analysts at different levels to call for forensic investigations and the firing of people implicated in the scam.

The saga continues to unfold on daily basis, coupled with arrests and revelations of money missing from government department and ministries.

President Joyce Banda, while defending her government, officials and aides on Wednesday last week on her return from United States of America, went ahead to fire her Finance minister Ken Lipenga and Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Ralph Kasambara and four others in a Cabinet reshuffle.

Civil society organisations (CSOs), activists, donors and some politicians had been calling for the resignation of Lipenga and others implicated in the scam.

The European Union (EU) and Norway have since threatened to withhold aid
