Thousands of people thronged Nsinja in Lilongwe to see off Anne Muluzi, former first lady for the country.

Anne died in Kenya where she was receiving medical treatment after a long battle with cancer.

People who attended the funeral include President Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera, Vice-President Saulos Chilima, George Chaponda who represented Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika, former first ladies Gertrude Mutharika and Callista Mutharika, and the clergy from different denominations.

Church service was led by Nkhoma Synod of the Church to Central Africa Presbytery (CCAP).

Speaking on behalf of the State President, Deputy Minister of Defense, Jean Sendeza, said that Anne was a symbol of strength and unity.

She said: “Here we are people of different interests, religiously and politically. We are gathered here with one purpose of seeing off the former first lady Anne Muluzi. This is unity and is what the State President is asking from all of us.”
