Bedir International School celebrates Cultural Day

Bedir International School in Lilongwe on Friday held a Cultural Day to celebrate cultural diversity.

Deputy Minister of Local Government, National Unity and Culture Owen Chomanika, who was the guest of honour, applauded the school for celebrating cultural diversity.

“It is important for young people to learn different cultures in a global world in which culture is important,” he said.

One of Bedir International School founders, Hamis Twabi, hailed the role of cultural diversity in bringing people together.

He said Bedir International School has 18 nationalities and the Cultural Day brings the students together and helps them to learn from one another.

Said Twabi: “We celebrate Cultural Day every year to teach our students the importance of every culture they are coming from.

“Our motto for this school is ‘excellence and unity’ because we believe in unity.”

Some of the highlights of the day included performances by kindergarten learners who showcased the Chewa culture by singing and dancing in kutchena and chilundu attire.

The celebration was demonstrated through various cultural aspects from different nationals, including food preparation, dances, dressing and the history of respective countries.

The school has students from Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, India, Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ethiopia, Wales and South Korea, among others.
