Blantyre City Council has begun the construction of the Green Malata-Bangwe Living Waters Church Road.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, the city mayor Joseph Makwinja said the road project was aimed at improving transport and infrastructure development in the city.

He said the 2.8-kilometre project, which will cost K3.2 billion, will be built by CAS Civil Contractors and is expected to be completed within eight months.
Makwinja further highlighted the importance of the road, noting that it will also have a bypass to ease traffic conjestion for people travelling from Limbe to Mulanje District.
He said: “Once completed, this project is expected to boost economic activities in the township by easing travel and reducing traffic congestion around the Weaving Factory area, benefiting people in Green Malata to Nthandizi.”
Residents are excited about the project, believing it will reduce traffic, improve pedestrian and motorcycle operator safety, and give the area a fresh look.
Group village head Gomanjira said the road project demonstrates the council’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the lives of Blantyre residents.
Echoing Gomanjira’s remarks, Stafford Willy, a motorcycle taxi operator, said they have been facing challenges with traffic congestion in the township, leading to many avoidable road accidents.
