Nyasa Big Bullets Women and CY Sisters have clinched 2022 FAM Women’s Football Regional League titles with a game to spare each.

Bullets Women did it in the Southern Region on Saturday following a 4-0 triumph over Ntopwa Super Queens at Kamuzu Stadium while CY claimed the Northern Region honours on Thursday with a 2-1 victory over Topik Sisters at Mzuzu Stadium.

Nyasa Women celebrate after the victory

This is the first title Bullets Women have won since rebranding from Blantyre Zero last year after a takeover by the ‘People’s Team’.

So far, the Maggie Chombo-Sadiki-coached side has 39 points from 13 games, six ahead of second-placed Ntopwa, who have played the same number of games.

On Saturday, Mary Chavinda hit a first-half brace before Vanessa Chikupira and Zainab Kapanda struck once each after the break to give Bullets a reason to get into the New Year with a spring in their step.

Chombo-Sadiki said: “This is a great way of welcoming the New Year. This victory is a great gift from the players, who followed instructions and gave all their effort to achieve success. What a happy new year!”

With their strikes on Saturday, Chavinda and Chikupira have also reduced the top-scorers chase in the eight-team league into a two-horse in-house battle. Chavinda leads the pack with 42 goals while Chikupira is second on 40. Ntopwa forward Kondawu Banda is third best scorer on 36 goals.

In the North, CY Sisters are the champions with 34 points from 13 games. Moyale Sisters are second with 25 points while Topik are third with 24 points after 12 games apiece. The two sides will not reach the points that CY Sisters have accumulated even if they win their remaining two games each.

In their latest fixture, CY scored through Vitumbiko Mkandawire and Eltech Phiri whereas Topik pulled one back through Tiwonge Chirwa.

Mkandawire leads the scorers’ chart with 29 goals. Phiri follows with 11.

CY Sisters coach Aaron Kamanga said he was excited with the performance of his charges throughout the season.

In the Central Region, there are still a number of games to wrap up fixtures, but DD Sunshine lead the eight-team log-table on better goal difference as they are tied on 21 points with second-placed Destiny Academy and third-positioned Ascent Academy after nine matches each.

National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) chairperson Suzgo Ngwira said they are happy with the competitiveness of the leagues so far.
