Carlsberg Malawi Limited on Saturday refused to disclose whether it will continue sponsoring football in the country.

Carlsberg Malawi last year signed a K60 million (about $150 000) three-year-sponsorship deal with Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to develop football in the country.

But speaking during the crowning of Kamuzu Barracks (KB) as 2013 Carlsberg Cup winners at Sunbird Mzuzu, Carlsberg Malawi senior brands manager (alcoholics) Twikale Chirwa said a decision will be made at a later date.

“In every business transaction one carries out, stock taking is vital. So, unless we sit down as management, we will not say whether we are continuing or not,” he said.

“All we want is for you [football fraternity] to improve on one of our three cornerstones which is discipline, then you are guaranteed of our sponsorship,” he said.

Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports Justin Saidi commended Carlsberg Malawi for its sponsorship which he said complements government’s plans to develop sports in the country.

KB goalkeeper Lehman Nthala claimed the Carlsberg Cup Discovery of Talent Award. He was also named man of the match during the final match.

For his feat, Nthala pocketed K110 000 (about $275) for both awars.

His teammate Harvey Nkacha received K100 000 (about $250) for being top goalscorer with six goals.

KB beat Moyale Barracks 1-0 to lift the trpohy.
