Carry the citizen’s crosses, too
Dear judge Mbadwa,
My lord, an Easter season in an election year is something special. From what happened last week, you were right to surmise that most politicians across the aisle were eagerly looking forward to Good Friday for ulterior motives.
Some even started practising last month carrying the cross with weights in their private gyms to ensure a faultless parade when they join the faithful in the Way of the Cross.
My lord, I like the symbolic act of the cross-carrying that these politicians demonstrate, but whether they are ready to carry the citizens’ cross post September 16 is something that I doubt very much.
Most of them are just the modern day Simons of Cyrene who were compelled to carry the cross by the electorate but will disappear into the crowd before reaching the political Golgotha with the electorate they so much wanted to impress.
My lord, I just don’t see the political type that is ready to die with the citizens and resurrect with them post September 16.
Nyasaland’s politicians have always advanced a parochial agenda and they want the citizens to both carry them and their crosses on their way to political glory.
Do you want a clear definition of hypocrisy? Look no further than the politicians who are ready to play church this holy week forgetting that they were spewing insults at the clergy for holding a different political opinion.
But this Easter season, an opportunity has availed itself for politicians to repent and demonstrate why they want the electorate to sponsor their selfish ambitions to power.
At least being honest to a electorate that has become used to being lied to would help a lot my lord.
My lord, this Easter season should enable Lazaro, Mapuya, Amayi, Car-bar-mbi, Sangalalani Nakondwa, Chairman’s son and others to do some soul-searching on whether they are ready to abandon the political contraband they carry as they seek to woo voters.
What would they lose my lord in admitting this Easter season that the majority of the promises they are now making are just lies concocted to hoodwink gullible Nyasas again?
My lord, this Easter season will be meaningless if these politicians are not going to disclose that they have already enacted a Judas by not disclosing that they already got dirty money to sponsor their political campaigns.
The majority of them have already courted the devil promising him government business when they ascend to the throne. Some have already signed secret pacts, detailing the nature of contracts and positions they are offering in exchange for campaign money.
My lord, some of these people who are pretending to be closer to Christ, who died and is risen today, have not disclosed that they have secret groups of naive youths who are ready to cause a reign of terror in their strongholds to stop rivals from gaining ground.
In fact, among those who carried the cross last Friday were politicians who were surreptitiously plotting the downfall of their rivals, including ‘stealing primary elections’, but have neither repented nor forgiven their enemies.
My lord, if the politicians are ready to carry the citizen’s cross as they claim, they should, in the spirit of the Easter season, admit that they have been pretending to have the welfare of the people at heart all along.
If Christ was indeed bruised for our iniquity and wounded for our transgression, politicians would remove the sheepskin they have been hiding in and repent for the good of Nyasaland.
Happy Easter for He is risen,
Yours
John Citizen.
