Check noise polluters in residential areas

It happens so often these days such that an immense problem is slowly spreading its roots as scores of people seem to accept it as a normal way of life albeit the frustrations and inconvenience that come with it.

A neighbour hosts a bridal shower, wedding, prayers or an engagement ceremony and while he or she and their guests worship or party the hours away, those living in surrounding houses have to put up with endless hours of irksome high-pitched music.

Sometimes it is a mere birthday party; at times, it is just an overzealous neighbour who, after buying a new sound system for their house, wants to show off how powerful their newly-acquired home theatre is.

There is probably no ill-intention on the part of the noise polluter, but sound—being what it is—is not, unfortunately, barred by the walls; it penetrates right through the visible barricades, spreading generously and imposing itself on those living close by while producing unpleasant effects and discomfort to the ears.

Meanwhile, someone whose plan was to spend a quiet weekend at home is disturbed by the deafening volumes at which the music is played. If it is in the medium or low density areas where people rarely know the people situation in the next compound, there is possibly someone ill in there who may find such interference rough; or else, there is a family or two in the neighbourhood nursing infants who are usually irritated by the loud music. Even small activities such as mere conversation in the other homes are interfered with.

And, it’s one thing to have the music play during the day when some people can easily leave home and find solace elsewhere, but when it blazes in the night it becomes even more unbearable for neighbours who cannot catch sleep in noisy environments such that they have to stay awake until such a time when the singing stops or the music equipment is switched off.

Yet, very few people will stand up to such neighbours to complain about the noise; hence, numerous victims suffer in silence while the people responsible for the noise pollution continue to host one event after another.

While some of the event holders have the courtesy to alert or invite neighbours to such events—at least so they know and make informed plans for the day—others just carelessly ambush the unsuspecting neighbours who often suffer from stress related illnesses or have their productivity compromised due to sleep disruptions.

Even though noise pollution is thought to have less damage on humans than water, air or land pollution, it is still an environmental pollution that ought to be stopped by community law enforcers who need to check worshippers or the misuse of loudspeakers during outdoor parties and discos.

Sound is essential to our daily lives, but noise is not and those that have ever been affected by severe noise pollution know that this issue needs attention.
